Preventive Dentistry: Sealants

What is a sealant?
A dental sealant is a thin, resin coating painted on the biting surface of a tooth. Sealants are applied on the grooves of molars and premolars.

Who needs dental sealants?
Sealants can be applied to anyone at any age. They are usually reserved for growing children whose teeth are transitioning from baby teeth to adult teeth. The first permanent molars usually erupt around age six. During this time, new adult teeth are susceptible to getting cavities because the tooth itself is young and not highly mineralized. This is a perfect time to apply sealants!
